Cal focuses his practice on insurance defense and reinsurance litigation and arbitration. Clients benefit from his extensive knowledge of the insurance industry derived from his prior work as Vice President/Chief Litigation Counsel to St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, now Travelers, for nearly 35 years. In that role, he managed all of the non-claim litigation filed against the company, including multiple class action suits, bad faith claims, and direct action litigation. He also provided counsel on many insurance and reinsurance regulatory issues. In 1979, he authored St. Paul Fire and Marine’s agency agreement that became a standard in the insurance industry, many parts of which are still used.
Cal has broad experience in errors and omission (E&O) issues involving brokers and agents. He directed the runoff of all E&O claims worldwide for a London-based brokerage firm and significantly reduced the overall litigation expense generated by the runoff of the brokerage firm through careful supervision of the dispute process and vigilant management of inside and outside resources.
Later in his career, as Director of Reinsurance Recoveries, he worked with reinsurance markets worldwide to pursue reinsurance recoveries on behalf of St. Paul/Travelers. Through his leadership, his team collected millions of dollars in reinsurance recoveries. Among many other accomplishments, for several years, Cal managed and ultimately successfully resolved a complex reinsurance dispute venued in the United Kingdom, France, and the United States.
Cal received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law (now Mitchell Hamline College of Law) and graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Psi Chi from St. Olaf College.
