Robert Keena helped build Hellmuth & Johnson’s litigation practice to find solutions that others don’t think of. “Other firms have more diverse practices, but I don’t know of any that embrace complexity with creative thinking the way we do,” he says. “I love it when someone who has a tough problem, and who’s getting pushed around and bullied, comes in and says, ‘I need a bulldog.’”
As chair of the firm’s litigation practice and an active member of the real estate, construction and employment law practices, Robert channels his tenacity and imagination on behalf of Minnesota, North Dakota, and Illinois individuals and businesses that face a variety of litigation issues, including:
- Complex multi-party litigation
- Commercial disputes
- Mortgage loan repurchases and buy-back litigation
- Construction disputes
- Employment law and litigation
- Insurance claims
- Probate litigation
He has extensive commercial litigation experience in matters involving real estate disputes, shareholder disputes, trade secret protection, probate disputes, and large-scale tort actions in Minnesota and North Dakota. His construction practice involves the representation of a significant number of builders faced with contract issues, as well as representing property owners and community associations in first party property damage claims and appraisals in disputes with insurance carriers. He also represents these groups when they are faced with construction defect claims.
The passion Robert brings to his practice has not gone unnoticed. For ten consecutive years (2008-2017), he has been chosen for inclusion in the Minnesota Super Lawyers® list; only 5% of attorneys in Minnesota are selected each year. He was also named a Minnesota Rising Star for multiple years running. Robert is a frequent speaker and author on a multitude of legal issues including Construction Law and Litigation matters, and appears regularly in print and on television.
Robert is licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota, the State of North Dakota, the State of Illinois, the Federal District Court of Minnesota, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Hennepin County Bar Association.
Robert obtained his J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law, and graduated with the school's criminal law award for academic excellence. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, with a B.A. in history.
